Indian Army Lists 42 Apps which May Act as Chinese Spy

Indian Army has listed a total of 42 apps on Android platform which can transmit your data from mobile phone to China for spying purpose and thereafter asked all soldiers to delete these apps from their mobile.

Among these apps, UC Browser is also there. I personally believe UC Browser is a shitty app, which buggy UI and transmits all of your browsing through Chinese servers for the sake of data compression and faster browsing.

Tower Companies of India (November 2017)

As Indian telecom sector is going through the merger and acquisition - the consolidation of the mobile operators is pushing the consolidation of the passive infra providers, most specificly the tower firms. Apart from the carrier/operator's own tower companies there are several independent tower and infra providers in the market and these companies depend on the tenancy of the towers by small and mid sized telecom operators. Now as the consolidations are reshaping the market, it's obvious that the tenancy business is not working. And at the same time operators, burnt out by huge debt, plan for renting towers to cut down operational costs.

While RCom is struggling to find a potential buyer, Airtel is calculating for ideal stake holdings. And Amercian Tower Corp, backed up by US dollar, is siphoning the remaining smaller players.

Indus Towers
Web: http://www.industowers.com
Indus Towers was founded in November 2007 by country’s leading mobile operators Airtel (42%), Vodafone India (the then Vodafone Essar; holds 42% share) and Idea (16%). In March 2009 Vodafone formed a new company called Ortus Infratel Holdings, and the investment on Indus Towers is now going via Ortus.

After Vodafone and Idea both announced to sell their own towers to ATC, it seems obvious that Indus Towers may be left in the hands of Bharti.

Indus Towers is the world's largest tower company with a presence of more than 1,20,000 towers across the country.

Moz://a Firefox v57 is Fierce : Future of Web?

Since I got my hands on internet on my desktop in 2005, I was a browser fanatic. During that days I used and tried my hands with Avant Browser, Firefox Browser, Maxthon Browser, SeaMelon, SeaMonkey, K-Melon, Opera and many others (I forgot all the names)

Soon I used to like Opera, and I never looked back. Even in 2017 I have a portable Opera 12.x version on my laptop for casual browsing. In 2013 Opera shifted from own Presto engine to Google's Chromium project's forked Blink engine. I had to jump with new Opera 15 but never satisfied as many features stripped off. Some of those lost features were integrated later to Opera 15+ versions.

Opera is still a great browser, and still I am using it along with a portable Opera 12.x version. I never like the Chrome UI, it's too minimalistic.

However I got an Opera alternative - Vivaldi which is made by Opera Software co-founder and former CEO Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner and Tatsuki Tomita. It was launched in April 2016 and packs some great features and more are added by fast updates.

Android Software Update: A Thing Many OEM Skip

Huawei is going to launch Honor 7X, the successor of Honor 6X which was quite popular for the dual camera set up. It will be launched in India by December 2017 at unbeatable price as informed by AndroidAuthority.

Honor 7X will come with Kirin 659 chipset, 4GB RAM, 5.93 inch display, full HD+ resolutions (2160 x 1080 p), 18:9 aspect ratio, 32/64/128GB internal storage and upto 256GB microSD support, dual rear camera 16 + 2MP, front 8MP camera, 3340 mAh battery with Huawei's SuperCharge technology, IP67 rating - dust and water proof, EMUI on Android 7.1 Nougate out of the box.

On paper 7X is quite good phone, but what I don't like about Honor series from Hauwei that they did not update the smartphone into latest Android version. I used their Honor Holly 2 Plus and received only one security update, that too nearly 1.5 years after the inital launch of the smartphone.

RCOM to Shut Down Mobile Voice Services of Own and MTS, Focus on Enterprise only

India’s CDMA saga is over, as RCom announced the completion of the acquisition of MTS India network. It seems to be the end of an chapter of Indian telecom, as the CDMA network of MTS is to be shut down by 30th of November 2017. The lone CDMA survivor is Tata Docomo CDMA, which has been already acquired by Airtel and 800MHz will be soon vacated for LTE deployment once the deal is completed.

For MTS CDMA customers it will be very much problematic, as the text received by users from RCom, mentions clearly that they can migrate to RCOM’s 4G data network or port out to the carrier of their choice.

Recently RCom and Aircel, who had the plan to merge, opted out from the merger agreement and post that Rs. 4500 crore debt-laden RCom has gone through several drastic decisions –

  • they will not renew license of DTH business (services will be stopped by November 18 and customers will be moved to Tata Sky) operated under RelianceTV (previously BigTV); Reliance TV has the lowest market share among 6 DTH companies in India (others are: Dish TV, Tata Sky, Airtel TV, Videocon d2h and Sun Direct). [Update #1: Tata Sky will offer seamless migration for RelianceTV users, who can swap the prepaid account balance to Tata Sky accounts]
[Update #2: On November 6th Reliance Communications announced that Reliance Digital TV or simply RelianceTV will be sold to Veecon Media and Television. Veecon will “acquire the entire shareholding of Reliance BIG TV with business on ‘as-is where-is’ basis, along with all existing trade liabilities and contingent liabilities"]

Microsoft Edge Browser for Android Installed on my smartphone, Hangs on First Run

Microsoft seems to be always on the negative side, whenever we talk about Browsers!! Many smirked that Internet Explorer is the best browser to download Chrome/Opera/Firefox.

Few days back, I installed Microsoft Edge browser on my Android smartphone, and it hanged on the first run!! Sharing the screenshots!!

FYI, Microsoft is not bothered regarding the poor performance by their browsers constantly.

Gigabit LTE - Global Progress and India's Approach to 5G

India recently saw Gigabit FTTx connectivity in Hyderabad
Recently there is sudden rise of updates regarding 5G, the next of 4G. Even India, who is often left behind to global telecom standards has been gearing up to welcome 5G.

Telecom industry is referring Gigabit LTE as next of current 4G/LTE offering; Gigabit LTE is also being advertised as 5G. Many experts use the term LTE Advanced Pro, but Qualcomm promotes the term 'Gigabit LTE'. Technically Gigabit LTE means LTE to offer 1Gbps download speed.

Chinese equipment vendor ZTE explains Gigabit LTE as pre-5G or key to 5G, paving the way for a comprehensive evolution from 4G to 5G. Technically we may even call it as 4.9G

Road to LTE to Gigabit LTE:

Consider your network as a highway of trucks and you can understand the basic theory of upgrade process of LTE. Say, that highway is jammed by huge number of cars and that is exactly as LTE network is over loaded by huge traffic from huge number of users. And your data speed gets crippled.

Windows Phone Called Off, Future of Microsoft in Mobile Space?

On October 8, 2017 Microsoft's Corporate Vice President in the Operating Systems Group, Joe Belfiore posted a series of tweets on Twitter, which confirms that the company's mobile platform Windows Phone is officially dead, and Windows Phone platform will be on maintainance mode - bug fixes and security updates will be shared till 2019 max, but new features and hardware not being the focus. The main reasons he pointed out that lack of developers supporting the platform, lack of hardwares and low volume of users on the platform.

This is the new face of Microsoft, lead by Satya Nadella, which chooses collaboration over competition, as noted by The Verge. Microsoft is shutting down many related apps and services and extending them to other platforms.

Microsoft announced shut down of Groove Music (previously Zune Music) by December 31, 2017. At the same time Microsoft's Edge Browser is to be launched on iOS and Android app store. Arrow Launcher has been rebranded as Microsoft Launcher.

[Press Release] Vodafone Egypt Selects Openwave Mobility for Faster User Experience and Outstanding Mobile Video QoE

REDWOOD CITY, CA – September 6, 2017– Openwave Mobility, a software innovator enabling operators to manage and monetize mobile traffic, announced today that Vodafone Egypt has selected Openwave Mobility’s NFV-based download acceleration and encrypted video management solution to enhance subscriber Quality of Experience (QoE) and manage rising encrypted video traffic. With a customer base exceeding 40 million subscribers, Vodafone Egypt is one of the leading mobile operators in the Middle East.

Mobile data across the Middle East has been growing at a phenomenal rate and much of this is down to mobile video streaming.  As mobile networks carry increased traffic loads, subscribers can suffer poor Quality of Experience (QoE) including long wait times and video buffering.

“As the volume of mobile data continues to grow, we needed a flexible solution that can handle all traffic types and assure our users of a greater mobile data experience” said Osama Siad, Vodafone Egypt’s Technology Director.

Introduction to nextGen LTE : Gigabit LTE

Exploring the true potential of Gigbit LTE, US tech giants Verizon, Ericsson and Qualcomm broke the barrier of 1Gbps on LTE, as Qualcomm's press release notes on 21st September, 2017 on 21st August. This is industry first with commercial silicon and network infrastructure to hit over 1Gbps on LTE, 1.07Gbps to be precise.

The testing process used Qualcomm'x X20 LTE modem, and Ericsson radios and LTE software and utilized 12 LTE streams on three 20 MHz channels of licensed Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) spectrum, alongside 4x4 MIMO and 256-QAM.

The 1.07 Gbps speed was achieved using only three 20MHz carriers of FDD (Frequency Division Duplex using separate transmit and receive frequencies) spectrum, achieving new levels of spectral efficiency for commercial networks and devices.

In the begining of August (to be specific 2nd August, 2017), the same trio - Verizon, Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies had touched astounding 953Mbps in a joint commercial network deployment in Boca Raton, Florida. The demostration used network components from Verizon including a cell site, hardware, software and backhaul; most advanced radio systems from Ericsson (micro Radio 2205 for LAA) and Gigabit powered Qualcomm's Snapdragon X16 LTE modem (based on Snapdragon 835 mobile platform).

Jio De-Clutters Indian Telecom by Removing Many Add-on Packs

Long back I wrote down some similarities between Jio's strategy and Google's strategy in India and United States respectively.

After nearly one year of Jio's commercial launch (= SIM availablity to everyone) we must admit Jio disrupted the mobile telephony by price and services.

Jio did it uniquely, began as a greenfield operator, deployed own fiber optic network and towers, dealt with several tower and telecom companies for infra sharing and launched world's fastest growing telecom and digital services platform. And they deployed single technology - 4G/LTE, even their voice and texts are going through LTE networks across 2300, 1800 and 850MHz spectrum.

But after the free days are over, Jio launched the plans similar to developed countries where a single plan offers voice, text and data. Before Jio came, every existing operators have several prepaid packs - some for talktime, some for SMS pack, or rate cutters for own network, for local calls or STD calls or for roaming purpose.

airtel vs Jio LTE Speed Comparison

This week I ported to Airtel and I could not resist to make a comparison of two 4G/LTE giants - airtel and Jio.

Day : 22nd July, 2017
Location : Shyamabazar, R.G.Kar Medical College Campus.
I found that in this campus airtel has some issues with LTE signal, probably because of the old buildings.
Weather: It was raining.

Google WiFi at Rail Stations Gets a Brandname : Google Station

Partnered with Indian Railway's own telecom arm- RailWire, Google had launched free WiFi services in Indian Railway stations across the country back in January of 2016. I posted a review of this free WiFi services at Sealdah rail station - read here. The deal between RailTel corp, the mother of RailWire brand and Google Inc. was signed in September 2015 with a target to reach 400 railway stations, equipped with WiFi. In January 2016 Mumbai Central became first station in India to have Google WiFi.

Kabab Gully of Calcutta at Zakaria Street and Phears Lane

Ramzan is just ended, and the zeal over Kolkata's Kebab street Zakaria street is growing year by year. This is 4th July of 2017 and we had Ramzan on 25-26th June. During the Ramzan days I had a visit into Zakaria St. without any homework. I just googled it and visited the damn place - directly through the Nakhoda Masjid's gate on Central Avenue, opposite to Md. Ali Park. I just went straight and soon met the crowd of Ramzan, the narrower street by the middle-of-the-road stalls across the Zakaria st, till the road ended at Rabindra Sarani and Nakhoda Masjid crossing.

India's Payments Banks - Will they Change India's Banking Sector?

Payments banks are predicted to change our country's poor banking system in coming days. As majority of payment bank licensee, approved by Reserve Bank of India are directly or indirectly related to Telecom industries, it can be assumed that India's telecom industry can be a partner in changing the banking landscape or banking system can be revamped by telecom majors-owned, stripped down version of conventional banks, which are in turn known as Payments Bank.

As per RBI norms, Payments banks have to focus on providing basic financial services, including social security and utility bill payments, remittance functions, and can mobilise deposits of up to Rs 1 lakh.

Payments banks differ from traditional banks, as they don't offer any credit card or loans. Also you can keep maximum of 1 lakh rupees in the payments bank account. Experts believe payments banks are not replacement of traditional banks but they can be the bridge between people without banking facilities and digital banking system, paving a way towards Digital India. Payments banks will be better than the e-wallet systems (Citrus Pay, Ezetap, Freecharge, Mobikwik, Citi MasterPass, Ola Money, Jio Money, HDFC PayZapp, ICICI Pockets, JusPay Safe, PayUMoney, LIME, MoneyonMobile, MomoeXpress, Mswipe, Oxigen, PayMate, State Bank Buddy, Vodafone M-Pesa, mRupee, ItzCash etc) which almost offers the same except interest, ATM cards and some other facilities like pure banking services like ATM usage, cheque book use etc. Interestingly e-wallet business got an escalation after demonetization (banning of old Rs 500 and 1000 rupees notes), though many think digital wallet business model is not viable.

Migration to Blink-based Opera 15+ from Opera 12+ (Presto based) [Updated Regularly]

Story was first published on 18th March, 2014

I am a long time Opera desktop user (on Android I use Dolphin) and when the company moved on to Blink from its own Presto I did not move on as Opera desktop version was a downgrade of features.

However next update to Opera Presto is yet to come, and company's dev team is not caring about Presto-powered version anymore. So I am starting the migration to Opera Blink today.

This is a long process, and I will update here, as soon as I made some movement.

Jump into the water

Installed Opera 18.0.1284.63, installation was straight forward and there is no issues. When you first use it, you have to learn few new things:

Open a new tab, you will find 3 options - Speed Dial, Stash and Discover. We know about Speed Dial.

Stash means where you can dump pages to read on later. [on Opera 12 I use Tab Vault, another extension]

Discover is a Flipboard-like stuff which can show you news on different categories and that's too country-specific. This feature was debuted on Opera for Android and now it is available on desktop too. I don't find it's much useful. (Update: It's now Personal News, or feed reader inbuilt)

Coolwinks.com Review: Sunglass Bought on COD

Coolwinks Box
These days I would love to change my taste. Bit experimenting? Oh yes.

I don't shave with Gillette now, I use LetShave's products now.

Lenskart is definitely good for lens and glasses. There are some other lesser known alternative too. Coolwinks and Glassic. I tried Coolwinks, and found it is extremely cheap which made me a little skeptical. And Mouthshut reviews are mostly negative. Hence I put my order on Coolwinks by COD.

In 3 days the package was delivered in a good packing. The sunglass inside the box was intact (=not broken). It was said to be 100% UV protection giver, and I can't say that it's not.

Jio Pushes Mutation in Indian Telecom

Indian telecom was quite dull in 2015-16 until Jio stepped in and started offering free services. Entry of Jio, the ambitious telecom project by country's richhest man Mukesh Ambani has forced the Indian telecom to undergo a major reshape.

The most obvious change is merger and acquisition of telecom companies - which makes the telecom market quite smaller. If all go right, India will have only 5-6 players -
  • Reliance Jio
  • Airtel (acquisition of Telenor India, Augere Wireless, Videocon (partially) and 4G spectrum of Tikona & Aircel)
  • Vodafone-Idea (to be merged soon)
  • RCom-Aircel-SSTL
  • Tata Tele (rumor is they might merge with merged entity of RCOM-AIRCEL-SSTL)
  • BSNL/MTNL (there are chances that both PSU may merge)
Among all, Vodafone & Idea's merger seems to create strongest entity which may give real tough competition to Jio and Airtel. RCom-Aircel-MTS(+Tata Tele) does not seem to be in a position to create a stir in the market as their present 4G coverage is based on RCom's 850 MHz band only and may they extend 4G to 1800MHz band; but the super-merged entity would not have any 4G network on 2300/2500 MHz where Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea are placed too firmly.

MTS's Promptly Sends Offers (though shitty) After You Raise a PortOut Ticket

I have been using MTS India's prepaid CDMA services for a very long time, probably from 2008 or 2009. However with the rise of Jio, I have to move to 4G/LTE. And since MTS will be taken over by Reliance Communications, the most untrusted brand of Indian telecom I need to bade a goodbye to MTS.

As soon as I sends MNP request to 1900, I got a prompt reply with MNP code and something unexpected. MTS, which is not responding to Jio/Airtel/BSNL/Vodafone/Idea's recent offerings sent a text, just after I got the MNP Code.

Apart from Aircel which is offering unlimited 3G data and voice like Jio's offerings (unlimited 4G data & voice), neither RCom nor MTS responded to market.

Jio's Slow Speed - Reason ?

Just yesterday I found out that Jio is using 10MHz of Band 40 to offer LTE data. (on JioFi2 device)

From the very begining Jio was offering 20MHz spectrum on this band (2.3GHz) along with 1800MHz and 850MHz band.

The reduction of 10MHz from band 2300MHz may cause slow speed on Jio LTE network.

However in Kolkata, where I took the screenshot, Jio has 30MHz of 2300MHz band. Is Jio using remaining 20MHz for LTE-Advanced or trials on 5G is on?

If I was in Mumbai I could have guess on 5G more specifically, but in Kolkata I am skeptical about it. Rather we can be on safe side - Jio is trialling for LTE-A in Kolkata.

RCOM Mobile Webpage Revamped to Stunning Look

JIO Effect - M&A Will Leave Just 5 Mobile Operators in India

If you see it correctly, Reliance Industries backed Jio had made a turbulence in the Indian telecom market. On the consumers' table Jio is playing by offering free data voice and digital services - which is actually disrupting the market by price game and service front. Jio continues to offer free services and extends it upto March 31, 2017 inspite of the complaints by the incumbents.

When we came to know about the existence of Jio, that's back in 2010 while Reliance Industries acquired pan India broadband spectrum winner Infotel Broadband (owned by Nahatas) just after the auction ended. RIL owned Infotel Broadband has gone through the makeover and it's now Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, a platform to offer digital services including 4G/LTE voice, LTE data, mobile TV, online music and movies, news, fiber broadband and many more. The plethora of RJIL services are being now offered under simple branding of 'JIO'.

We all know these, but in 2010 Indian telecom market was exploding with 12-13 operators in each circles. However in 2012 February Supreme Court cancelled the licenses issued in 2008; as a result many operators shut their stores across the country or partially - STel, Cheers Mobile left the business. MTS India, Videocon, Tata Docomo stopped services in few circles, Loop did not renew licenses and was sold to Airtel. After 2012, India's telecom sector had handful of operators - Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, BSNL, MTNL, Reliance Communications, Reliance Jio, Tata Docomo, Aircel, Telenor, MTS India and Videocon. (last 4 operators did not have pan India spectrum)

From 2010 to 2015 - every year I had a talk with Tarun, the founder of Telecomtalk that 'yeh saal sayed Mukesh Jio 4G launch karega' but it did not happen. In February 2015 Jio brought Jionet WiFi at Kolkata and therefore Jionet WiFi was extending to other cities too. However after the Q1 of 2016 we were getting hints that Jio is now on its way to launch LTE to aam admi very soon.

Personal Experience to Handle Post-intoxication Hangover

If you started drinking alcohols in your teen days and if you are near 30 you can see the difference when you are much drunk. You can't take the over-drinking much these days and oh fuck! that's hangover.

I am 27 right now, and I had started my social drinking at around 19. These days I hate the hangover more.

One of the reason we are facing hangover more because of liver's making two specific enzymes in a lower rate.

Prevention is better than cure:

1. Drink on such a day, you can take rest on the next day.
2. Judicious drinking - I prefer 3 pegs and not more at a go.
3. Drink water in the gaps.
4. Slow the drinking process, take your time. Relax and drink.
5. Don't fucking mix up. One glass of cocktail or one type of cocktail is okay but don't have many types of alcohols. If you mix up beer, whiskey and rum you will be doomed.
6. Slow down alcohol absorption rate in your body by taking water as told already. Remember protein chunks like chicken, beef or pork portions also help by slowing down it. So little bit oily starters do actually help to 'digest' alcohol.

Once you are fucked to have hangover:

1. Rest and take sleep if possible. It's often not possible as you have jobs to do.

2. Water, water and water: Drink water, hydrate your body

3. Fruits or juices: Go for a coconut water at the begining. Among fruits - orange, mushambi, apple, bananas are great.

4. Breakfast - skip or not - I in generally skip it but go for bunch at 11 am around with more fruits, chickens and others.

5. Proteins - Eggs - boiled/omelette or chicken soup can help.

6. Tea - herbal or green tea. I am not a tea lover, but I can tell you one secret - don't go for a coffee - it will further dehydrate you. Next don't drink a tea with milk - it might increase bloating and gastric upset. ( but cold milk is good in hangover unless you have lactose tolerance issue).

7. PPI - Hangover can be worsened with the gastric upset, so PPI can be a help. However I always use the combination of PPI+PKA (Proton pump inhibitors + Prokinetic Agents) in combination. Esomeprazole and Domperidon's combo seems to be best option.

FAQ to Jio 4G/LTE Voice Services

I already have been using JIO's digital services over Jio MiFi device since August end. I did not have much interest to get a JIO SIM for mobile as I did not like the idea to stand in a queue for long time to get a free SIM.

I had two barcodes - on Redmi Note 3 and Honor Holly and found that Honor Holly's bar code was stolen away already. So I prompted for using the barcode generated on RN3.

To my surprise the queue has been vanished and thanks to JIO's e-KYC solution the process is very fast.

1. What is JIO's e-KYC solution for SIM activation?

Jio makes the subscribers's document submission and activation of the connection on the SIM completely digital - it's superfast digital processing service by JIO e-KYC solution.

What you need to get a JIO connection in 10 minutes or less? Get a 4G smartphone, download MyJio app and generate the barcode. Now walk into any Reliance Digital store with your Adhaar Card and rest will be taken care of by the stuffs there. You will get a JIO SIM in few minutes after verification and submission of your application form online.

In my experience it hardly takes 5 minutes to complete the whole procedure.
