BSNL 3G - Hands On Review

BSNL 3G - Review

BSNL was the second operator in India to roll out 3G services. Currently it has pan India 3G coverage as users can roam on MTNL's 3G network in Mumbai and Delhi with no extra charge for data usage.

Tested at Barrackpore, West Bengal, Kolkata
Device used - Huawei E1550 3G data card

Speedtest.net results - Highly Disappointing !!! :(

BSNL 3G data tariff is 4p/10kB. So when you recharge for 2GB data pack BSNL will show you data balance in Rs 8191.99. Be careful as it is shown in Rupees and for each MB Rs 4 balance will be deducted.

Real time experiment:

While downloading with Internet Download Manager, I kept NetWorx running. See the screenshots:

1. Networx graph is showing maximum speed IDM got is 264kBps and the average speed is around 70-80kBps.

Click on the image to see at actual size.
2. I run Networx's Speed Meter for 10 minutes during this season of downloading. It shows max download speed was 274kBps and avg download speed 90.8kBps.

I cross-checked with MDMA (Mobile Data Monitoring Application). It shows Uplink capped at 8192kbps and downlink capped at 8640kbps while RSSI was -79dBm.

Conclusion: BSNL 3G has worst ping rates and also sometimes data loss during transmission. DNS change may help. ok for downloading but browsing experience may be a nightmare!!

As I used MTS EVDO, I can not recommend BSNL3G.
